Take a Staycation!

Just last week, I was asked to go on yet another vacation--to Florida. Though I would LOVE to spend another weekend with my feet in the sand, it scares me to make a commitment like that. Times are tough and I know that my wallet will be screaming for a life-jacket if I send it on another trip to the beach. I need to stay home and find fun things to do here. Between Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, who needs to go out of town to have a little fun? These days, there are ALWAYS things to do in our area that don't involve the hassle of travel. Take a staycation, and you don't have to worry about missed flights, bad hotels or 12-hour car rides.

In an effort to come up with a list of possible places to go, I visited the Louisiana Welcome Center and Visit Baton Rouge--great local establishments that offer brochures, welcome guides, maps and more. Both are located off of River Road in downtown Baton Rouge.

If you're looking for outdoor opportunities, then the State Parks are a GREAT idea. For instance, Lake Fausse Point in St. Martinville is just a short drive away from New Orleans and Baton Rouge--and offers beautiful cabins on a well-stocked lake, canoe rentals, an arboretum, walking trails, bike paths and more. You feel like you are in another world--but you haven't even left Cajun Country. Visit their website here for more information. On your way home, be sure to take the "scenic route" along the Atchafalaya and stop at Whiskey River in Henderson, especially if it's a weekend. I've heard a rumor that Geno Delafosse makes guest appearances on Sunday afternoons a few times a month!

If you are looking for a combination of a good history lesson AND great food, then downtown Baton Rouge has a solution. Check out the awesome Mardi Gras exhibit at the Louisiana State Museum (they offer free admission on certain days!). Take a trip to the top of the capitol and visit the gift shop. And, make sure you get the full tour of the supposedly "haunted" Old State Capitol. For lunch, stop at Poor Boy Lloyd's on the corner of Lafayette and Florida streets. The food is "Slap Ya Mama" good and they have live cajun music several days a week. DEFINITELY worth a visit! There are so many more things that I could list about Baton Rouge--for a great comprehensive guide to 225 things to do in the Red Stick, click here.

Finally, make sure you never underestimate the power of the "tourist." You know how it is--we always try to avoid the tourist traps in New Orleans. But, even if you're from the area, you can still enjoy yourself. When was the last time you rode the street car, just to see the neighborhoods and relax? Or took the kids to the Aquarium? Have you ever visited Blane Kern's Mardi Gras world? They have a new location since Katrina and I've heard it's even better than before...
How about taking a run through Audubon Park? The shopping at Canal Place is unlike anywhere else. And what about Fulton Street? Those restaurants and the walk are very enjoyable! Also, I've heard Plum St. snow-cones are the BEST! And, who can find beignets better than Cafe Du Monde? I could on and on....

A staycation is all about finding fun, creative ways to explore your community and surrounding cities--without breaking the bank. Make sure you turn off the phone and forget the computer--plan it just as you would a real vacation.

And don't forget the most important part--Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!

Designer Digs....for a great deal?! Where?...

Went to Lafayette for the weekend and found out about a great new shop headed to the area! If you're okay with "digging" for sales and designer clothes for a super duper discount, the you'll love this place.

Many of you might know about Plato's Closet (the resale "teen" shop with locations in Baton Rouge and Lafayette). If you do, then you know that there are sometimes some great finds in there, but you have to dig through 5,000 cartoon tees to find them. I went this weekend with my little sister so that she could find a few things for school. She walked out with 6 items for a grand total of $19....And, I have to say, I actually found a great pair of shoes that I couldn't live without (Steve Madden 1 inch wedge sandals, red, adorable!) for the low, low price of $10 bucks. But, for those of us who have to dress for the professional world, we might desire a different shop. Enter..... Clothes Mentor.

This is the new venture from the makers of Plato's--but for women in the "corporate" world that want to look great in designer digs for 70% off the retail price. Opening in August, the shop will be right next door to Plato's (across from Old Navy at the side entrance to Mall of Acadiana).

They will buy and sell items from places like Ann Taylor, Banana Republic (yay!), Gap, Talbots, Chico's, and more. AND--they will have designer bags from all the greats... Coach, Louis Vuitton, and others! "Heaven" for people like me who change their mind about clothes in their closet every 1.5 seconds---now, when I visit Lafayette, I can get rid of a few things that I don't necessarily wear and grab a few "new," fun pieces without breaking the bank.

Jackpot!!!

A Small World

The saying "What a small world" has a whole different meaning when you come from South Louisiana.

This past weekend, I was in Destin, FL. Among the hundreds of thousands of people on the beach, I heard a little "Wayne Toups" tune playing in the background one morning. I followed the sound and found a group of people sitting in LSU chairs, under and LSU tent, speaking in a familiar sound only known to those of us from Cajun Country. They turned out to be a mixture of Breaux Bridge and Church Point natives, celebrating the 4th of July in true Cajun fashion--two-steppin' with beers and good food in hand--300 miles from home.

That same weekend, we searched for a place to eat and wound up at a little restaurant on the beach where the chef was from--you guessed it--Acadiana. New Iberia to be exact. I knew we were walking into home-town territory when we saw a sea of Festivale Internationale and Crawfish Festival posters lining the walls. The yummy food was reminiscent of a Saturday night meal that we might have at our camp in Henderson--crawfish etouffee, shrimp creole, and shrimp po-boys. I went back to the hotel that night thinking....

"Wow....what a small world."

It made me realize: everytime I travel, whether it's a hundred or a thousand miles away, there is ALWAYS someone from my little part of the world right around the corner. It's such a comforting feeling to find someone that understands you when you say things like "Mais cher!" or "Couyon"....or a shirt that says "Geaux"on it, and they don't ask you why it's spelled that way.

If I can keep it up, I want to blog about all of the little intracacies about South Louisiana.

Good restaurants, great dance spots, festivals, must-see sites and more--for those of you not from our area who desire to visit a place that full of wonderful memories.

And, for those of you who *are* from cajun country, I wish to keep you updated on places outside of our own area that 'feel like home' for when you travel. Starting with...
